Dementia‑related Stigma in the Workplace

Ìý

Diagnosing dementia as early as possible is the best way to slow disease progression. Yet, people who are at-risk of developing dementia may avoid seeking a diagnosis out of fear of facing stigma, particularly in their job.

Dr.ÌýJudith GodinÌýwas awarded a Nova Scotia Health Research Fund award to conduct research that helps us better understand dementia-related stigma in the workplace. She and her team of collaborators at Saint Mary’s University and St. Francis Xavier University explored how Human Resource (HR) professionals perceive employees diagnosed with dementia; their willingness to provide workplace accommodations for employees living with dementia, and; understand whether people react differently to counterproductive workplace behaviour based on an employee’s gender or dementia status.

This project was reviewed by the Nova Scotia Health Research Ethics Board (REB# 1028491).
